Organizers of the 2022 Ryder Cup in Rome are in danger of losing the event after the president of Italy’s Senate removed an amendment from a bill that would have provided approximately $ 103 million in financial support for the event.
Senate President Pietro Grasso stripped the amendment after it got through the Senate’s Finance Committee on Tuesday, saying the amendment was unrelated to the bill at hand. The financial support package is a requirement of the European Tour’s agreement with organizers to bring the biennial competition to Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Guidonia, just outside Rome.
However, it appears that the decision was more punishment for trying to attach money to something unrelated, not an outright rejection of providing funding for the Ryder Cup.
“The Ryder Cup is and remains a great opportunity for the country,” said Andrea Marcucci, president of the Senate’s Culture and Sport Committee, according to the Associated Press. “Grasso’s decision is technical, it’s not about the content of the amendment.
“I hope the government quickly finds a solution which responds to the prerequisites asked for by the organizers. I want to remind everyone that the tournament has a considerable economic spin-off and television rights. The amendment in question didn’t call for further public spending.”
The European Tour told Sky Sports on Wednesday that it remains confident the funding will be secured.
