There are plenty of reasons why you might hold your own golf tournament. It’s a great way of getting people together and a lot of fun and is surprisingly easy to organize. If you’re thinking of doing something similar, then read on. We’ll take you through the various things you need to think about.
Have a reason
Whether it’s to raise money for a local charity or just a big thank you to your employees for all their hard work over the year, it’s important to have a reason to hold a golf tournament. Although many people are competitive, the golf itself may not be enough to get people involved. Most people will need an extra reason to participate, and to make the event go off with a big a bang as possible, you’ll need a large attendance.
Start planning
Set a date in your diary and throw it out there to those you want to be involved. It’s worth arranging an extra day, too – just for safety. You can never guarantee what the weather will be like so it’s always wise to have a backup plan. Once you have a few dates in mind, you can start ringing around the different golf courses in your area. Each one is likely to have an experienced tournament organiser there to help you through the process. Also, the better golf course you find, the more memorable your day will be.
Arrange games
Unless your tournament is made up of vastly experienced golfers, you will probably get a broad range of golfing expertise turning up. Think of these people when you are planning your games – nothing is worse than coming to a fun event and being thrashed into the ground for the entire day. So, come up with a few ideas to even the odds. Maybe pair up good players with novices, or introduce a handicap. Anything you can do to even up the games will improve the day for everybody.
Get a trophy
It’s important that people remember their day out – especially if it’s for a charity. A great way of helping them do so is by sorting out some prizes for the winners – and everyone else that takes part. Think about getting a range of trophy cups and dishing them out to people – and not just the winners. You could make it a lot more fun by having trophies for the worst shot of the day, for example.
Collect the money
Now you have the day in place; it’s advisable to start collecting money. People will be more inclined to make the effort if they have already paid, so make sure you set a date well in advance when entry fees are due. You can also think about sending entrants a welcome pack with information about the day and a schedule.
Have fun
If you have planned your event well enough in advance, you should be able to relax and enjoy the big day as much as everyone else. Golf tournaments often run themselves once they start getting going. As long as you have a few helping hands on board, you should have a well organised – and fun – day ahead of you. Enjoy!
