You don’t get much stranger than the start Rory McIlroy had at the PGA Championship on Friday. Sitting five strokes off the lead and in need of some magic, McIlroy put his second shot on his first hole, the 10th, wide. Very wide. So far wide that this was his only option:
Yes, that’s McIlroy trying to shoot his way down the cart path at Quail Hollow. He’d somehow ended up in a location so far wide that even the PGA Tour’s shot tracker listed it as “unknown.” Here’s a graphical representation of McIlroy’s hole:
So what did he do? A bit of classic Phil Mickelson-style magic. He fired the ball down the cart path, past the heads of some very brave/stupid spectators, right through a bunker, and onto the edge of the green:

He would later finish out the hole for a routine par. Perfectly normal start to the round.
