Tiger Woods has signed on to bring a major-caliber, first-class golf course to the Second City, and he did it, in part, at the urging of the outgoing President.
Woods’ TGR Design firm has agreed to architect a new golf facility on the acreage currently occupied by a pair of popular Chicago Park District-owned public courses, Jackson Park and South Shore, situated along Lake Michigan on Chicago’s South Side. The Woods group has been hired by a newly formed group called the Chicago Parks Golf Alliance, headed by NBC golf commentator Mark Rolfing and created with the backing of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, which will steward the project.
“It’s an honor for me and TGR Design to be designing this golf course in one of America’s greatest golf cities,” said Woods. “This project can create incredible possibilities for the community on the South Side. We want to design a course that everyone will enjoy.”
The Woods design has to bridge two properties that are joined by a small sliver of lakeside land. The development, which is tentatively set to begin in 2017, will create a new public course and a short course for families and developing players, and would be scheduled to be finished in late 2020. The intention would not only be to offer a world-class public golf experience in Chicago but also potentially lure a major championship to the venue and add it to the rotation of BMW Championship hosts.
The next step will be to pursue community buy-in for the project. Emanuel has promised that the new course will not only be publicly accessible but also offer discounted green fees to neighborhood residents.
