Tiger Woods made the cut at the Memorial Tournament on Friday, putting in a 6-footer on his last hole of the day to see the weekend.
It might have been better had he missed.
Woods followed up rounds of 73 and 70 at Muirfield Village Golf Club with career-worst, 13-over 85. That score is three shots worse than the 11-over 82 Woods shot to miss the cut in his 2015 debut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
After a pair of consecutive early bogeys, Woods ended the front nine disastrously. On the par-3 eighth, Woods made double bogey after going bunker to bunker with his second shot. A hole later, Woods’ approach shot to the par-4 ninth landed in the guarding water hazard leading to another double bogey and a front nine score of 6-over 42.
The back nine was a stroke worse.
Woods found water again at the par-5 11th, but salvaged bogey. Two more dropped shots followed in the next three holes before Woods made his only birdie on the day at the short par-5 15th. Following another visit to the water on the 17th and another bogey, Woods came to the 480-yard finishing hole at 9 over on the day, staring a round in the 80s in the face.
However, instead of Woods delivering the gritty finish few pros could muster in this situation, he posted his worst score of the day.
Woods pulled his tee shot into the water hazard on the left, then came up short with his third shot. Then, in a short-game display reminiscent of the chipping yips he showed earlier this year, he took five strokes to get into the hole, including chipping into a bunker. The quadruple-bogey 8 sent Woods to his career-worst tally and into last place by five shots.
If Woods felt motivated to practice for two hours after shooting 70 on Friday, he has a long range session ahead of him.
If he has any hope of being a factor in any tournament moving forward, Woods will have to find a way to get off the tee without finding trouble. Woods has come out right on the other side of his past swing changes, but it’s hard for anyone, including Woods, to imagine how this one works out as he hopes.
