The tagline behind the PGA Tour for a long time was “these guys are good,” but at this point you know that. They are absolutely incredible golfers that pull off brilliant shots each week, with that definitely being the case during the opening round of the Northern Trust Open.
Scoring at Riviera on Thursday wasn’t incredibly low during the opening round, we just saw a lot of golf shots find the bottom of the cup from off the green.
We begin with Jordan Spieth, who knocked this wedge in from 124 yards on the 7th hole for the rare eagle.
Jim Furyk was out of position on the second hole, but was still able to make birdie after this incredible shot went in from 151 yards.
Now begins the greenside brilliance of these players. Webb Simpson made eagle out of a bunker that was so deep you could barely see him in it. Martin Laird got a little lucky from a bunker when his ball crashed into the pin and stayed down for the birdie. Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño joined the great bunker play on Thursday with his own birdie from the sand on the par-3 14th, and that wasn’t the end of it all.
Rickie Fowler, sans a lot of the hair that has been a staple of his since he joined the tour, chipped in from a tough spot on the 15th, and D.H. Lee was able to birdie the 18th from off the green thanks to this incredible touch from the 26-year-old.
So, the hole was the size of a sombrero to a lot of the players on Thursday at Riviera. Hopefully the incredible shots continue throughout the weekend as the leaderboard is already shaping up to be one of the best of the season.
