After two-time NBA champion Stephen Curry received a sponsor’s exemption to participate in the Web.com Tour’s Ellie Mae Classic, some golf die-hards felt it was wrong to guarantee a spot in the field to a part-time golfer.
Well, on Thursday, Curry may have silenced some of those critics by posting a respectable 4-over 74 in the first round of the tournament at TPC Stonebrae in San Francisco. Although at the end of his round he was tied for 141st, the sharp-shooting point guard’s round featured some pretty nifty highlights.

The first unanimous MVP in NBA history got off to a shaky start by hooking his opening tee shot into a golf cart cupholder and making three bogeys in his initial five holes. He was then able to settle his nerves and make a birdie on the par-five 15th on his way to a front nine score of 37. On the backside, Curry again carded a 37 – making two more birdies to go along with two bogeys and a costly double bogey on the par 4-fifth hole. All things considered, the Warriors guard has to be satisfied with his performance in his first professional golf tournament.
Curry, who holds a 2.0 handicap, decided to take part in this particular event due to the partnership between the Ellie Mae Classic and the Warriors Community Foundation.
The top 65 players from the 156-player field will make the cut and return for weekend play after tomorrow’s round. Coming into the tournament, Curry had +900 odds to make the cut and -2500 to miss it according to some sports books.
It’s still unlikely that Curry will stay the weekend, but his eight-year NBA career and short pro golf career have certainly taught us to expect the unexpected.
