There were plenty of questions to come from what happened on Friday at the Honda Classic, when Rory McIlory, the defending champion, walked off the golf course after just nine holes of golf. The No. 1 golfer in the world cited "severe wisdom tooth pain affecting concentration" and while I'm sure that would be painful, a lot of people were questioning if that really added up considering how bad he was playing and the fact that he mentioned not being there mentally to media in the parking lot before exiting PGA National.
Brian Keogh of the Irish Golf Desk caught wind that Rory will talk next Tuesday at Doral about what really happening, "coming clean" to exactly what happened at the Honda.
"According to his friend, McIlroy fully accepts the criticism he received in the media following his surprising decision to walk in after the red mist descended when he was seven over par for his second round at PGA National’s Champions Course on Friday. He will also confirm that he was in severe pain."
The friend wanted to remain anonymous, but I have to say, if McIlroy really takes the time to admit to the media that he was either really in pain and needed to leave or that he just was fed up with the way he was playing and needed to get out of there, it's the right thing to do.
We've all had moments on the golf course where we blow up, freak out, or lose it when things aren't going our way, and that type of stuff still happens to the best players in the world. No matter the truth of the matter, I think it's smart that Rory is going to speak on this at his WGC-Cadillac Championship press conference and it'll definitely go a long way in winning back some respect he lost from people that were upset with the way he handled that situation.
