Rory McIlroy has laser eye surgery, wears the Specs of Shame

Rory McIlroy shifted his focus to the off-season, quite literally, on Wednesday when he underwent laser eye surgery.

The world No. 3 took to Instagram to share the news that he was ditching his glasses and contacts. He also shared a photo of the special glasses he’s wearing while he sleeps during the recovery process. He likened them to the cones dogs wear after having some kind of surgery performed by a vet, so we’ll go with the Specs of Shame to explain what’s taped to his face.

McIlroy is done for 2015 after wrapping his year with a fourth worldwide win at the DP World Tour Championship on the European Tour, locking up the season-long Race to Dubai for the third time in four years.

The surgery comes at a time where McIlroy is very happy with his game, especially heading into 2016. In an interview with Golf News Net, McIlroy said he wasn’t planning on making any changes to his game during his time outside the ropes.

Right now, I’m happy with where I am with my game and, while all parts will never be working perfectly all of the time, will really only begin to put the smallest tweaks in place when I begin my pre-season routine in Dubai in early January 2016,” he said. “I’ve no plans to make any changes when I finished the season playing really good golf.”
