Jason Garrett references the Masters, should probably stay in his lane

If you’re a golf fan, you’re probably already thinking of the Masters. It’s less than 100 days away, people!

Based on a comment made Sunday by Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, we’re going to count the former quarterback as a golf fan.

After the Cowboys won against the Detroit Lions for their first playoff win since the 2009 season, Garrett was asked about a crucial, gutsy decision to go for it on fourth-and-6 from the Lions’ 42-yard line with six minutes to play in the game. Quarterback Tony Romo completed a 21-yard pass to trusty tight end Jason Witten, setting up what was ultimately the winning touchdown pass to Terrance Williams.

Garrett’s thought process was illuminating.

“One of the things that kept going through my mind,” Garrett said of the decision, “is that when you get a chance to go play at the Masters, you don’t lay up. You go after it.”

Not so fast, Jason.

Back in 2007, Zach Johnson won the Masters, his only major title to date, by laying up at each of Augusta National’s four par 5s in each round. The 16 layups lead to 11 par-5 birdies and a green jacket.

Then again, after Bubba Watson’s final-round drive at the par-5 13th to practically put away his second Masters title, maybe Garrett has a point.
