Golf club’s ‘$9.11 for 9 holes on 9/11′ promo goes so very, very wrong

Oh no. Oh, this is so very, very bad. In an unfortunate attempt to “honor” 9/11, the Tumbledown Trails Golf Course in Wisconsin crafted the above advertisement. As you can imagine, it wasn’t received very well. And you thought Golf Channel’s unfortunate tweet about Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream was bad.

Deadspin put together a summary of the club’s responses. Bottom line: it sure looks like they didn’t think this through, and they’re very, very sorry.

Really, it’s not hard to see how something like this could happen … provided you had absolutely no connection whatsoever to the events of 9/11, and were lacking in a little basic decency or common sense. Look, tragedy loses its power over time — check out this Titanic slide for proof — and what wrenches the soul of one generation is the annoying history class of another. But this was just twelve freaking years ago. Unless Tumbledown Trails is staffed entirely by middle-schoolers — which is a defense the club might want to consider — there’s absolutely no excuse for this.

Think, people. Just think. That’d avoid so many, many problems.
