We are two days into the Accenture Match Play, and while plenty of big names have been bounced, we have some really solid matches on Friday at Dove Mountain. Here are the four we think you should really keep your eye on throughout the third round.
Sergio Garcia versus Rickie Fowler — If there is a career to compare Fowler to at this point, it would have to be Sergio, who was very hyped coming into professional golf, had some success early but has struggled in some of the big moments, something that has haunted him for most of his career. Fowler comes in with three consecutive missed cuts on tour but has taken out both Ian Poulter and Jimmy Walker. Expect Fowler to keep rolling on Friday as long as that putter stays hot. Pick: Fowler
Hunter Mahan versus Graeme McDowell — This match doesn’t just feature two huge stars on the PGA Tour, but a rematch of that famous Ryder Cup finale back in 2010 (McDowell won that match and the Cup for Europe). Hunter has played solid this year, but he hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2012, so a win on Friday would do a ton for his confidence moving forward at the Accenture. Pick: Mahan
Matt Kuchar versus Jordan Spieth — The defending champion up against boy wonder, who looked like a veteran in his dismissal of Thomas Bjorn on Thursday. Spieth has been great, but Kuchar is a match play wizard and will smile his way to a victory on Friday. Pick: Kuchar
Louis Oosthuizen versus Webb Simpson — Two major champions trying to get a much needed win, Oosthuizen got here by defeating Henrik Stenson while Simpson took care of Brandt Snedeker. This match seems like one that could go the distance, but I’m leaning towards the American to make it to the next round. Pick: Simpson
