Well, this is it folks, we’re down to the last major championship of the year — also know as “Glory’s last shot.” We’ve been talking all week about some of the biggest names at the PGA Championship, mentioned a couple sleepers, discussed the key storylines and mentioned some groups that could make some noise this week. With that in mind, it’s time for the Devil Ball crew to pick a winner. This year the Wanamaker Trophy goes to …
Jay Busbee (Twitter: @jaybusbee) — Dustin Johnson: All right, my last majors pick was a guy who was leading right up to the 71st hole, and then he gave it away. This time around, I’m going reverse-mojo on the jinx, picking a guy who was leading the 2010 PGA Championship until the 72ND hole and then let it slip away. Dustin Johnson has been in the mix for virtually every major around, several times over, and he’s got that flying-under-the-radar edge to him that makes him a very good pick this weekend. Hence, I shall.
Jonathan Wall (Twitter: @jonathanrwall) — Louis Oosthuizen: It’s rare that my Showdown pick and winner pick end up being the same guy this late in the year (because I almost always burn my winner pick before the PGA), but for at least one week I don’t have to worry about rooting for two different names. As far as Oosthuizen is concerned, I really like his game on an Ocean Course that’s sure to frustrate a number of guys in the field when the wind starts to blow. The South African has success in blustery on the big stage (St Andrews), and has been playing well of late with a T-4 at the Bridgestone. Plus, I don’t think success on the greens will be a huge factor this week, and that plays perfectly to Oosthuizen’s good, but not great, short game. Take it to the bank, friends: Louis Oosthuizen will be your 2012 PGA Championship winner… I think.
