Monday qualifying on the PGA Tour is normally reserved for the “what if” story. What if I had made just one birdie? What if I hadn’t choked on the final hole? What if I had finally got that break I need?!
On Tuesday at the The Lakes at Castle Hills, it was anything but a depressing situation if you in the fan club of Case Cochran. A 25-year-old mini tour golfer that spends most of his time on the Adams Pro Tour, Cochran shot a 3-under 69 that included six birdies and was in a playoff for three of the remaining four qualifying spots when the unthinkable happened.
Cochran pulled 7-iron on his fifth playoff hole, a 152-yard par-3. His tee shot did what everyone dreams their tee shot will do on a par-3, but this time the hole-in-one meant he would be making his PGA Tour debut that week in Dallas.
The hole-in-one was good enough to land him a spot at the Byron Nelson, meaning this kid will be headed to the big show with a story that will be talked about by even the biggest names at the event on the driving range as the tournament kicks off.
The other thing that Cochran has going for him is the potential that this shot has on his career. While winning this week might be a bit of a stretch (we’ve seen crazier things happen), just making the cut will most likely land him a paycheck that would make what he gets paid on his mini tour seem like pennies on the dollar.
While no video has surfaced yet of the shot, it does bring back memories of what Jonathan Byrd did in a playoff at the 2010 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.
