Facing an ultimatum, 2020 Olympic golf tournament host Kasumigaseki Country Club has voted to admit female members, satisfying a condition of ending its all-male membership to continue as host of both golf tournaments for the Tokyo games.

Yoshiro Mori, president of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee, applauded the change.

“I’d like to extend my gratitude to the members of the club for their understanding and cooperation,” Mori said in a statement.

The club, which opened in 1929, allowed women to play on the club’s property and have lower forms of membership short of a full vesting. With this change, which happened after some stalling from the club’s board over a potentially embarrassing failure to approve the measure, the club has satisfied calls from Tokyo’s governor, the International Golf Federation and the International Olympic Committee.

The decision follows Muirfield’s all-male membership approving a similar change in a second vote, earning a spot again in the R&A’s British Open rotation.
