A teenager doesn't make a cut too often on the PGA Tour, which is why Kyle Suppa is special.
Suppa, a 16-year-old Hawaiian, made the 36-hole cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Friday. He shot a pair of 1-under 69s to make the cut on the number at Waialae Country Club. He's dropped just one shot through two rounds and sits 10 shots behind co-leaders Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson and Justin Thomas.
The teen is a junior at Punahou School in Honolulu, where President Barack Obama attended, and earned his way into the tournament by winning an all-amateur qualifier in November. He's also the reigning Hawaii State Amateur champion. He'll attend the University of Southern California in 2016.
Suppa isn't guaranteed a final-round tee time, however. Since more than 78 professionals made the 36-hole cut, there will be a secondary cut to the lowest number near 70.
This isn't the first time a 16-year-old has made waves at the Sony Open. Back in 2007, it was Tadd Fujikawa who made the cut and played his way into contention before fading into a still-impressive tie for 20th place.
