2016 Acura RDX

The Best of Both Worlds

Make no mistake that the sole Acura brand revolves around spirited driving. But despite the difficulties in retaining that achievement in an SUV package, the Acura RDX still manages to provide adequate interior real estate, luxury looks and feel, and an overall smooth and fun car to drive.

While the RDX name in itself is not new, but the 2016 model receives updated treatment inside out with a modernized front grille, LED headlamps, new tail light and freshened interior design. Safety features can be purchased as upgraded options that include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and mitigation, lane departure warning and intervention, a blind-spot monitoring system and automatic wipers.

In terms of powertrain configuration, the Acura RDX is kept simple with a well respected 3.5L V6 engine. This sales strategy simplifies life for both on the sales and consumer end. But conscious buyers who want to opt for more fuel efficient alternatives such as diesel, or hybrids will be out of look. But regardless of the fact, this year’s engine design is more powerful than the last while achieving better fuel economy at 23 mpg combined thanks to its new cylinder de-activation system.

The Complete Look

Looks on RDX (along with the rest of its family genetics) are generally subtle and low key in design while maintaining the luxury element in its overall design. New in 2016 is Acura’s stunning Jewel Eye cubed LED front headlamps and fancy 18″ alloy rims standard on most models while the elite model comes equipped with fog lights and enhanced wheel design.

Interior cabin space resembles that of a lacquer black grand piano – it’s simple, beautiful, yet sophisticated underneath its shell. Quality of finish is great with leather materials very soft to the touch. Insulation and choice of materials are of solid and good quality. Overall feel is spacious with a psychological feel of being in a light and nimble car (which it is).

As an additional tech purchase option, the 410 watt ELS sound system designed by grammy-award winning music producer, Elliot Scheiner for added audio crispness and clarity.

Buttery Smooth Mobility

Unlike most others that have bought in on complicated engine technology such as hybrids and turbos, the Acura RDX chooses to remain true to its roots with an naturally aspirated 3.5L 24-valve iVtech V6 engine producing 279 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque. Coupled to the engine is a 6 speed automatic transmission with sequential shift mode and paddle mounted shifters on the steering wheel. New in this year’s model is Acura’s AWD system with the ability to split power between the front and rear wheels at a 60/40 split ratio.

The Acura brand is renowned for its balance between luxury ride quality and performance handling. And the RDX shows no exception. Acceleration is responsive, smooth and uninterrupted thanks to its organic V6. Steering also feels light and responsive with a good amount of positive feedback. It’s an overall fun car to drive with the benefits of family functionality.

The RDX demonstrates the persona of a well executed crossover employing luxury qualities and performance capability. Under normal driving conditions, the RDX is well insulated to provide a quiet and comfortable cabin space. Push the gas pedal and the car responds with a pleasant engine tone and swift acceleration.

What’s ultimately appreciated is its renowned Honda reliability with the benefits of all the luxury amenities while maintaining a respectable combined fuel economy. With all that being said, the Acura RDX proves that a well executed car design doesn’t have to be sophisticated with excessive detailing and technology. And that is what the Acura brand statement is all about.
