This past weekend saw a lot of great story lines and we are here to give you the good and the bad of it. Here are our winners and losers from the past week in golf.
Winners
Steven Bowditch — It wasn’t the final round he had hoped for, with four bogeys and a double-bogey offset by just two birdies, but it was all he needed to win his first ever PGA Tour event and earn a spot at Augusta National. Not bad for the 30-year-old Australian who got himself in a position to win in San Antonio thanks to three early rounds in the 60s.
Will MacKenzie — While everyone else was backing up it was MacKenzie who took advantage on Sunday, posting a final round 2-under 70 to jump six spots and snag a T-2, his best ever finish on the PGA Tour.
Brendon Todd — On a Sunday without a ton of fireworks, Todd made five birdies and just one bogey to jump 18 spots and finish T-6, tying his best finish of the season at TPC San Antonio.
Losers
Phil Mickelson — Pulled muscle or not, Lefty was the biggest attraction of the week at a tour event that desperately needed him. His withdrawal just added another wrinkle to a season that has seen the two biggest names in golf combine for exactly zero top-10s heading into April.
Matt Kuchar — The biggest name in the field after Mickelson left on Saturday seemed destined to win this event after a Saturday 65, but his Sunday was 10 shots worse and left the No. 11 ranked player in the world looking up a leaderboard he should have dominated.
Billy Horschel — A season ago Horschel was picking up his second of four straight top-10s at the Valero, but on Friday it was another trunk slamming day for one of the men expected to have a huge season. Horschel has now failed to finish in the top-40 in his last four events which included two missed cuts.
