The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play event revamped its format in 2015. It’s no longer a single-elimination, NCAA tournament-style event from the start.
Now, the 64 players who have descended upon Austin Country Club this week have been divided among 16 “pods” of four players each. The winner of each “pod” advances to the Sweet 16, which will be single-elimination matches contested over four rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
Before the PGA Tour’s Sweet 16 begins, you can see which players win their respective “pods” as Yahoo Sports will stream PGA Tour Live’s featured holes coverage of the round-robin competition Wednesday-Friday from 4-8 p.m. ET on our Golf page. Each golfer will play one match on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and the player with the best record in his “pod” will advance to Saturday’s Sweet 16.
Among the golfers you will see Wednesday are defending champion Jason Day, who faces Pat Perez in his Round 1 match, and Phil Mickelson, who opens with Si Woo Kim.
Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson and many more stars will try to bring home the title. You can get all the latest updates throughout the WGC-Dell Match Play event on the PGA Tour/Yahoo Sports scoreboard.
“You got the best players in the world at the WGC, so it’s got an unbelievable feel,” said Johnson, the top-ranked player in the world whose “pod” consists of Martin Kaymer, Webb Simpson and Jimmy Walker — all major champions like Johnson.
