Before the Turkish Airlines Open began on Thursday, Tiger Woods admitted to coming in a little rusty. After the Presidents Cup the schedule for Woods was fairly empty, but he played pretty well at the made-for-TV event against Rory McIlroy and after an opening round 2-under 70 it seemed things started to click for Woods.
Tiger shot a second round 63 on Friday, making nine birdies and no bogeys and finding himself just a shot off the lead held by four men including Henrik Stenson and Ian Poulter.
How good of a ball-striking day did Woods have? Even he admitted after his round that the course-record 63 could have been much lower if a few putts had fallen.
“It could have been really special,” Woods told the Golf Channel after his second round. “I missed about four putts inside 10 feet for birdie and if I make those it’s a pretty low round.”
It wouldn’t have been the first time that Woods had flirted with that magical number of 59. Earlier this season at the Bridgestone Invitational, Woods looked like he might post his first career sub-60 round in a PGA Tour event but settled for a 61 at Firestone, and while Friday’s 63 was a couple of shots higher, it has Woods in a brilliant position heading into the weekend.
