Video: Nick Watney makes incredible double-eagle at U.S. Open

SAN FRANCISCO — OK, now it’s starting to get a little ridiculous. One day after Alvaro Quiros aced the par-4 7th hole during a practice round, Nick Watney went out in the first round of the U.S. Open and double-eagled the par-5 17th hole.

The hole was playing at a managable 505 yards, but that doesn’t make what Watney did any less impressive. With a 5-iron in his hands from 190 yards out, the California native took a rip and watched as his ball rolled casually into the hole for only the third double-eagle in U.S. Open history (TC Chen (1985) and Shaun Micheel (2010) had accomplished the feat in the past).

You’d think a double-eagle would be a rare occurrence, but the funny thing is, it’s actually the second one recorded in a major championship this year. If you’ll recall, Louis Oosthuizen holed out for double-eagle on the par-5 second hole at the Masters.

With two in the last two majors, fans are going to start expecting double-eagles at every major championship in the future. You may want to lower that bar, gentlemen.
