There are guys out there that seem to be good at everything. You know the guy I’m talking about, that can pick up a ping-pong paddle and whip your tail after bowling 216 the night before.
It appears that guy might be Tony Romo. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback/scratch golfer was paired with Jordan Spieth this week at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Romo was incredible impressive in the early rounds, putting his team atop the leaderboard after three rounds thanks to some booming drives and solid birdies.
But then the final round came and Romo and Spieth struggled to get the ball in the hole. According to the Dallas-Morning News, the two combined for eight lip-outs on Sunday, finishing third in the pro-am division.
“It was just one of those days,” Spieth said. “We both hit good putts on a lot of holes, and we had probably eight lip-outs combined today. Sometimes that happens.”
Said Romo: “You’ve got to get it in the hole sometimes, and we just missed our opportunities. … You’ve got to make some putts to go low.”
The twosome combined to shoot 68 on Sunday at Pebble Beach, leaving them 29-under for the week, two shots back of the winning team. While 4-under doesn’t seem that bad, it was the highest score of anyone inside the top-23 that made the cut, but with eight lip-outs you can’t expect anything extremely low.
Now comes the question, how good is Romo at golf? A writer asked Romo after his round what he thought when people joked that he should leave the NFL for the PGA Tour, and he shot down the “rumors” rather quickly.
“I think they’re wrong,” he said. “I’m pretty good at what I do. I like to compete, and it gets our family out on a couple of vacations once in a while and it makes it an enjoyable experience.”
Romo is a solid scratch player, and has posted some solid rounds in competitions, but if you take a minute to look at what guys like Brandt Snedeker did this week, especially on the greens, you realize the distance between a scratch player and someone that does this for a living.
That said, I don’t think I want Brandt tossing me anything over the middle with the Seahawks’ secondary aiming to put me on the turf, so it all works itself out.
