For Tiger Woods, the 2014 season might be all but over after withdrawing from another PGA Tour event because of injury.
Woods, playing in just his third event start since returning from back surgery that kept him out of the Masters and the U.S. Open, pulled out of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday citing a lower back injury.
Tiger got to the ninth hole sitting at 3-over for the day, and after his tee shot grabbed his back and could barely walk to the golf cart that was taking him off the course, leaving Firestone early for his second Sunday WD of the year.
Here is video of his drive on No. 9.
Woods said the injury came on the second hole, where an awkward lie above a bunker forced Tiger to hit his shot and then fall back in the fairway bunker. It looked harmless at the time, but Woods said in a statement after he left the round that it was a different type of pain and that it was something in his lower back.
“Happened on the second hole when I hit my second shot. I fell back in the bunker … I just jarred it and it’s been spasming ever since,” Woods said in a statement.
What more can we say about Tiger and his injury issues? At this point it seems that his year is all but over even with the PGA Championship coming back to a course he won on in Valhalla next week.
Tiger needs to get healthy before he can really commit to playing any sort of competitive golf, and while many will question his decision to return to golf at Congressional and play the British Open and the Bridgestone, it’s time for Woods to really take the time off he needs to return 100 percent healthy, if that’s even possible at this point.
As for the FedEx Cup playoffs and the Ryder Cup, it looks as of now that both will be without Tiger Woods, a big blow for both events considering he is still the biggest draw in the game.
