Tiger Woods announced Friday he will start his 2015 campaign in back-to-back weeks at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Farmers Insurance Open.
Earlier in the week, Golf.com reported Woods had made preparations to play at TPC Scottsdale for the first time since 2001. The return coincides with the playing of Super Bowl XLIX at nearby University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., just after the tournament concludes on Feb. 1.
Woods will then play the next week at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, a course on which Woods has won eight times as a professional, including his 14th major in the 2008 U.S. Open.
Since 2006, Woods had kicked off his season in the United Arab Emirates, taking large appearance fees to play in one of two European Tour events held there in January, typically followed often by a start in San Diego. Omega and HSBC, the sponsors of the U.A.E. tournaments, were unwilling to pay Woods’ rumored $ 3 million appearance fee in 2015, however.
Woods has apparently filled that gap, at least this year, with a start in Phoenix.
