After an up-and-down performance in his professional comeback at the Hero World Challenge earlier in December, Tiger Woods has indicated another time we can expect to see him peg it against the best in the world.
Woods formally committed to the Genesis Open on Tuesday. The event, formerly known as the Northern Trust Open and the Los Angeles Open, will be played Feb. 16-19 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., and is now run by Woods’ tournament-management company. Logically, Woods would then play in an event whose success in which he has a stake. He’s done so in the past with the Quicken Loans National and Hero World Challenge.
This tournament is special to Woods, a southern California native. He made his PGA Tour debut in this event at the age of 16. Now nearly 41, Woods reflected on that journey.
“I’m very excited to come back to Riviera and compete in the Genesis Open,” Woods said in a release. “This is where it all started for me. It was my first PGA Tour event. I was 16 years old, I weighed about 105 pounds. It was a life-changing moment for me.”
Of course, this may not be the next time we see Woods compete. While non-committal after the showing in the Bahamas, Woods has said he hopes to resume a more robust schedule in 2017. That could well include a return to the Middle East for one of the European Tour’s United Arab Emirates events to start the year, cashing in on a potentially big appearance fee. He could also play at Torrey Pines in the Farmers Insurance Open from Jan. 26-29.
