LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Niem Stevenson and hometown freshman guard Jarrett Culver both had 18 points as Texas Tech remained undefeated with a 103-69 win over Savannah State on Saturday.
The Red Raiders (6-0) never trailed after scoring the game's first eight points, a stretch capped by Justin Gray's dunk after he had already made two free throws and had a tip-in basket.
Zhaire Smith, another of Texas Tech's seven freshmen, had 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting, along with five assists and four rebounds while playing 19 minutes. Brandone Francis added 10 points.
Texas Tech has won all of its games by double-figure margins.
John Grant Jr. had 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting with four made 3-pointers for Savannah State (2-5).
BIG PICTURE
Savannah State: The Tigers allowed more than 100 for the third time this season. They've scored that many twice.
Texas Tech: With a mix of five seniors and seven freshmen in coach Chris Beard's second season, the Red Raiders have found a nice mix early on. They could be in line to break into the AP Top 25 poll on Monday. Texas Tech was the second team in others receiving votes in the latest poll, and did what it was supposed to do this week with a pair of lopsided victories against overmatched opponents.
UP NEXT
Savannah State has another difficult game, going to No. 6 Wichita State on Tuesday night.
Texas Tech will be heading to New York City to play Seton Hall on Thursday.
