Robert Streb is a winner on the PGA Tour. With a birdie on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff at Sea Island Golf Club, Streb had defeated Will MacKenzie and Brendon de Jonge to take the McGladrey Classic for his first PGA Tour win.
MacKenzie, who was co-leader after three rounds with Andrew Svoboda, was eliminated on the first playoff hole with a bogey, leaving de Jonge and Streb both in search for their first Tour win.
Streb knocked his tee shot on the second playoff hole, the 179-yard par-3 17th to four feet, making the putt to close the door on de Jonge, who first missed his birdie putt.
The day was a grind for Streb, who began the day five back of the co-leaders. His final round of 7-under 63 got him to 14 under par, but Streb was in the clubhouse some 90 minutes before the final group, including MacKenzie wrapped up regulation.
The victory lands Streb in his first major championship, guaranteeing him a place in the Masters in April.
Since the start of the new season, Streb had been trending in the right direction. He opened the new season with a T-31 at the Frys.com Open, then finished T-10 a week ago in Las Vegas. Dating back to August, the 27-year-old has finished in the top 20 in five of his last seven starts.
