We tend to associate Tiger Woods and major championships together above everything else in golf, but it’s easy to forget that we are five years removed from the last time Tiger hoisted one of the four major trophies.
That 2008 U.S. Open was years ago, but still, Woods is the favorite heading into every major and that is still the case this week at Muirfield despite Tiger coming back from an elbow injury that kept him out of the AT&T National.
Woods was asked on Tuesday during his British Open press conference if he is still confident in his chance to win majors, and he answered as you’d expect Woods to answer.
“Even though I haven’t won a major championship in five years I’ve been there in a bunch of them where I’ve had chances. I just need to keep putting myself there and eventually I’ll get some.”
Tiger has always been able to put himself in the mix at majors, finishing in the top-six eight times since his last major win, but the No. 1 player in the world is only judged these days on that attempt to catch Jack Nicklaus’ 18 major wins and no matter how many random PGA Tour events he snags each season (he’s won four this season, by the way), we will only care when he gets one of these big four.
