Sergio Garcia hit the flagstick on the famed 17th hole, goes on to make birdie anyway

If there is one thing Sergio Garcia might be known for over the years it’s his ability to get down on himself and blame whatever he can for anything negative on the golf course. When golf restarted on Sunday morning at the Players Championship, Sergio and Tiger Woods had four holes to complete, and Garcia came to the famed 17th hole off a birdie on the 16th and hoping to get another circle or two on his scorecard before his third round ended.

Garcia’s tee shot on the island green looked good the whole time, and it was, but Sergio nearly had the irony of ironies as his ball hit the flagstick and looked like it might roll back in the water a la Tiger at the Masters.

It didn’t, Garcia smiled his way to the green and rolled the 12-footer in for birdie to get to 11-under, where he sits now with Tiger and David Lingmerth with one round to play.

A bad break for sure, but Sergio kept it together and made a great stroke for that birdie on the most famous hole at Sawgrass.
