Frequent British Open host Muirfield has decided to hold a vote by mail on the possibility of admitting women members, according to a report by The Sunday Times.
The Muirfield membership, known as the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, is one of only two male-only memberships in the Open rotation. Royal Troon, this year’s host, announced in July 2015 that it would begin a review into its male-only membership practices. Royal St. George’s announced in March 2015 that it would invite female members.
The Times did not indicate a timetable for the vote to conclude.
Muirfield last hosted an Open in 2013, which was won by Phil Mickelson, and has hosted the game’s oldest major a total of 16 times dating back to 1892.
