In 100 years from now, golf fans will remember only certain things about this generation of golfers. We will remember the Tiger Slam and and his win at the 1997 Masters. We won’t forget about guys like Ernie Els, Fred Couples, and the late Payne Stewart.
And we will always remember Phil Mickelson as the man who perfected the flop shot. Nobody has done more for the full swing around the green than Lefty, a man that has videos hitting flop shots backwards and over his golf instructor.
On Thursday at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, Phil was up to his old tricks with the lob wedge and it worked out perfectly for him on the par-3 4th.
Mickelson got a pretty bad break when his tee shot hit a sprinkler head and bounded over the green, but the Wizard with the Wedge took his usual full swing, popped it up on the fringe and watched it trickle just a few feet past the pin.
The shot was nearly impossible, but Phil pulled it off, rolling in the par putt and posting an opening 67, leaving him just a shot off the lead as weather has delayed much of the play on Thursday at TPC Southwind.
