In news that may only be shocking to family members of Colin Montgomerie, Paul McGinley has been named the 2014 European Ryder Cup captain.
McGinley was named the captain over Montgomerie on Tuesday after numerous European Ryder Cuppers dropped tweets with support for the Irishman.
The most supportive probably was Rory McIlroy, who dropped this Tweet on Sunday in support of McGinley.
RC captaincy should be a 1 time thing… Everybody deserving gets their chance and moves on… Would love to play under Paul McGinley in ’14

Others that chimed in?
Darren has taken his name out of the running for Ryder cup captaincy. It would be fantastic to have Paul Mcginley as the 2014 captain. — Ian Poulter (@IanJamesPoulter) January 14, 2013
I hope Paul McGinley gets his chance, he’s been an amazing Vice Captain and deserves an opportunity #2014RyderCup

McGinley competed on three Ryder Cup teams and will be going up against Tom Watson when the two teams meet up in Gleneagles in Scotland. What did Rory think?
Common sense prevailed in the end…. Paul McGinley 2014 European Ryder Cup captain!!! Couldn’t be happier for him… Roll on Gleneagles — Rory Mcilroy (@McIlroyRory) January 15, 2013
