Paul Casey may have to take a pass on the 2016 Ryder Cup.
The Englishman, who enjoyed a resurgent PGA Tour season that included two playoff losses, will not split time between the PGA Tour and European Tour unless the latter reduces the minimum number of events to maintain tour status from 13 to 11. For a European-born player to represent their continent in the Ryder Cup, they must be a European Tour member.
I will be brutally honest with you. I love the European Tour and I’d like to be part of a better tour, but I want to see change. I’m really not sure I’m going to rejoin.’
However, even if Casey took up European Tour membership, which he eschewed this year to focus on the PGA Tour, that’s no guarantee he makes Darren Clarke’s European team. When Casey was ranked in the top 10 in the world in 2010, then-captain Colin Montgomerie declined to give him a captain’s pick.
Ultimately, Casey, ranked 23rd in the Official World Golf Ranking after finishing 13th in the FedEx Cup, seems content to look after his own game.
“I’ve been able to work much harder on my game because I’ve cut down on the travelling and I’ve got the rewards,” Casey said, according to the Daily Mail. “Do I want to change all that next season?”
