Patrick Reed will be fined by the PGA Tour for “conduct unbecoming of a professional” for using a gay slur to chastise himself after missing a putt in the opening round of the WGC-HSBC Champions.
Reed missed his par putt on the first hole at Sheshan International (his 10th of the round), and then vented at himself about the three-putt bogey by saying, “Nice f***in’ three-putt you f***in’ fa**ot.”
The PGA Tour issued a statement on Reed’s remarks, implying disciplinary action is forthcoming.
“The PGA Tour Conduct Unbecoming regulations prohibit the use of obscene language on the golf course,” the statement said. “The PGA Tour will deal with this matter internally in accordance with its regulations.”
Reed shot 1-under 71 at Sheshan International to trail leader Graeme McDowell by four shots after Day 1.
