Even if one of the professionals don’t win this weekend in Dubai they have a very good chance at leaving with more money that they probably ever expected to make thanks to this offer from tournament organizers.
That’s because if you so happen to do the improbable on the par-4 17th hole on either Saturday or Sunday this week, you’ll land the same amount of money as the entire tournament purse thanks to this fun challenge from the people behind the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
The par-4 17th hole, which plays 359 yards, will be bombarded by tee shots over the weekend thanks to the $ 2.5 million number that will be rewarded to anyone that makes a hole-in-one on that particular hole.
How hard is this to do? We’ve only seen one hole-in-one ever on the PGA Tour, back at the 2001 Waste Management Open when Andrew Magee was able to card the double-eagle on, coincidentally, the 17th hole at TPC Scottsdale, but that won’t stop some of the big names from giving it a go.
Most notably in that group is Rory McIlroy, the man leading the tournament after an opening round 63. Rory said no matter what the situation is on Sunday, he plans to give it a run because you don’t get a lot of chances to make $ 2.5 million with one golf swing.
“There are not many chances you have to win $ 2.5 million in one shot, so I’ll give it a go,” Rory said. “”If you’re confident enough with your driver, why not? It might not even be a driver. If they move the tee up, it’s only going to play 295 or 300 yards. It’s a 3-wood. Why not?”
Rory failed to birdie the 17th on Thursday, but that didn’t stop him from taking a three-shot lead after one round, so maybe if he continues to extend this lead it won’t matter what he hits on Saturday and Sunday and he can just continue to pelt the green with no hesitation at all.
