Death, taxes and John Daly erupting at least once a year at a PGA Tour event. Those are the three things you can bank on and run with, and the latter happened on Friday at the Valspar Championship.
Daly, who had made the cut in two of his four starts heading into this event, shot a second round 90 thanks to a 12 he made on the par-4 16th hole. According to the Associated Press this is the 16th time in his career that Daly made at least a 10 or higher on a golf hole, and it came thanks to three shots in the water to start his hole and ended with a one-putt for the 12.
The round can’t really be explained, as Daly added five bogeys and three double-bogeys to that 12 he made on 16, but at least he had a little fun with it after his round.
“It was a good 12. I got up and down for 12,” Daly told reporters after his round.
What to make of such a high score? Nothing really. It’s basically just something that happens to Daly every so often, with the two-time major winner even saying after his round that he continued to fight even after that 12, which makes sense if you check his card and see the par he made on the difficult 17th after that explosion.
Daly explained after his round that he has been dealing with the “yips,” basically a golf term for someone struggling with short putts and feeling like their stroke becomes unhinged when they get the ball close to the hole. That yips problem would explain the reason that Daly took 70 putts in two days at the Valspar Championship, and why his round continued to balloon even before he made that 12 on No. 16.
You won’t be able to watch his 16th hole for now but just know that in a down week on the PGA Tour you can always count on John Daly to spice it up a bit no matter if it’s with a surprising low score that comes out of nowhere or a round of 90 that included a 12 like he did on Friday.
