Right now, Jason Day is unstoppable.
On Friday, Day first finished off a first-round 10-under 61 at the BMW Championship before shooting 63 in Round 2 at Conway Farms Golf Club just outside of Chicago. His 18-under 124 total is five clear of the 69-player field.
For the second consecutive round, Day dropped a shot and had an eagle, with the only difference being the number of birdies on the card. In Round 1, Day had nine birds; Day had just seven in the next.
Day capped off the second round with way he wished he capped off the first. Day reached the par-5 18th in two, leaving a 43-foot putt for eagle, which the Aussie sank to put an exclamation point on two of the best opening rounds in PGA Tour history.
Day probably would have preferred to eagle his final hole in Round 1, however. He began the day with a 44-yard pitch shot at the par-4 ninth, his last hole of the opening round, that, had it gone in, would have completed just the seventh round of 59 in PGA Tour history.
Instead, Day will have to settle for a share of the all-time PGA Tour record for the lowest 36-hole total in an event with two other players (Pat Perez, 2009 Bob Hope Classic; David Toms, 2011 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial). At 18 under through 36 holes, Day is batting .500 on strokes under par relative to how many holes he’s played. If that trend continues, Day would be the first player in PGA Tour history to break 250 for 72 holes and would also own the Tour’s scoring record in relation to par for a 72-hole event (Ernie Els, 31 under in the 2003 Mercedes Championships on the par-73 Plantation Course at Kapalua, Hawaii).
Brendon Todd and rookie Daniel Berger are the PGA champion’s closest pursuers, each in at 13-under par. Todd matched Day’s 63 for the round of the day, while Berger was a shot worse.
World No. 2 Jordan Spieth and Kevin Na are tied for fourth at 11-under par, while Rory McIlroy is tied for ninth at 9 under with Harris English and Dustin Johnson, who shot a second round-best 62.
