This past weekend at the LPGA’s Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic was all sorts of crazy. The week started with rains that basically flooded the entire golf course (Brittany Lincicome and Stacy Lewis were seen fishing out of some of the fairways during the delays), and the event was shortened to three rounds of 12-holes each. Ilhee Lee eventually won the event, but it was Irene Cho, a friend of mine and someone I have caddied for before on the LPGA Tour, that had the round of the day on Sunday to jump up the leaderboard and finish second alone.
Irene talked to us about the crazy week and her finish on Sunday, her best ever on the LPGA Tour, on Tuesday.
Q. When it started raining and flooding, did you think there was any way they were going to play the tournament?
A. Well we didn’t know how much it had rained until the next day and we saw the golf course and it was just flooded. Every hole was just flooded. Stacy Lewis went fishing on the 9th green!
Q. When you saw it, were you thinking ‘that’s it, we’re going to go home’ or what?
A. Honestly, we thought there was no way we were going to finish. There were rumors going around that we might switch courses and other rumors that we weren’t even going to play so yeah, we just thought we were done and we’re going to go home.
Q. You played okay for the first two days …
A. I shot even the first day, and 2-under the second day.
Q. So going into the final day you were pretty far behind. What were you thinking going into Sunday?
A. Well there was no cut, so you just wanted to go out and play your best and I was in 40th place so I was like, “Man, go out and try your best, it’s going to be super windy so stay patient and get the ball in the hole.”
Q. And you did that, you shot 7-under over 12 holes on Sunday.
A. Yeah, it was fun. It was a lot of fun.
Q. Were you mad it wasn’t more holes?
A. Honestly, mentally, it was so windy that we felt like we were out there for so long. I wish we did get to play 72 holes but just the circumstances weren’t available. It is what it is, and honestly it took us forever to start playing so by the time we started playing it went by so fast. It was a cool feel, they haven’t done something like this in forever, so it was fun.
Q. So you finish your 12 hole adventure, shoot 7-under, did you think you had a chance?
A. Honestly, I thought it was cool and it was good enough to win but I figured someone would come and beat me at some point and when (Lee) made a par save on her second-to-last hole I knew it was over.
Q. Is this the type of thing despite it being such a wacky tournament are you taking the momentum forward?
A. Oh definitely, you bring all the positives that you had this week and bring it to the next week and it’s awesome because we don’t have a week off and it’s leading up to a major that’s the LPGA Championship and then two weeks after that it’s the U.S. Open so you want to peak at this point.
