Last week in the Seattle area, Seahawks fans couldn’t help themselves from donning a lot of 12 apparel at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.
It was almost shocking someone didn’t unfurl a huge 12 flag behind the drivable par-4 12th on Sunday. Force of habit.
Just days after Jordan Spieth won the Open, the number 12 was again a rallying cry at a golf course all the way across the country. On Tuesday, Foxboro (Mass.) Country Club had 18 flags all sporting the number 12 on them in support of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, whose appeal of his four-game Deflategate suspension was heard in New York.
“We feel that this is a miscarriage of justice, way too much penalty for not enough crime, and we wanted to show our support for our hometown team,” said club manager Matt Killilea to WLNE-TV.
In response, a few club members suggested the idea of 18 No. 12 flags. It’s not some declaration of war against the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell, so much as a fun lark.
“It was very typical of this place and these people,” Killilea said. “They’re pretty funny and creative. There’s a lot of humor with this and a little loyalty behind it.”
