There are guys that can close, like Bubba Watson did a month ago at the Masters, and then there are guys that make an absolute charge up the leaderboard to win, like Felipe Aguilar did on Sunday at The Championship at Laguna National.
The 39-year-old Chilean headed into Sunday four shots back of the lead, and after a front nine 34 knew he had to do something special to give himself a chance at a second career European Tour title.
That was when he went absolutely nuclear, making birdies on Nos. 10, 11, 12 and 13. After a par on 14, Aguilar added a fifth back nine birdie with his four on the 15th, and his par on 16 set him up for the drama that we saw on the closing two holes.
Aguilar rolled in a beautiful birdie putt on the tough 17th and after finding the fairway on the 18th, watch his second shot hit, spin hard to the left and slam into the flagstick, dropping for the 72nd hole eagle and the final round 62.
His back nine 28 was incredible, but one of the most insane things is that the eagle was needed, with the leaders struggling on the way in to give Aguilar the one-shot lead. Another insane stat about this hole-out by Aguilar? This was the first time in the history of the European Tour that someone holed out on the final hole to win.
