The Tour Championship is here, and 30 players still have a shot (mathematically, anyway) at one of sports’ richest single prizes. In the run-up to the tournament, we’ll run down each of the players. For each player to win the FedExCup, multiple other players have to finish below certain levels; we didn’t run down all those possibilities, just the most notable ones. We begin with the back of the pack.
30. Scott Piercy: This marks Piercy’s first-ever appearance in the Tour Championship, and with 12 top-25 finishes, he certainly earned his way in. He achieved his second career victory earlier this season at the RBC Canadian Open. He came into the playoffs ranked 15th, and hung on to the final spot. To win the FedExCup, he’ll need to win the Tour Championship and Rory McIlroy will need to finish 29th or worse. Well, it’s been a nice run so far for Piercy.
29. John Senden: It was a nervewracking final day at the BMW Championship for Senden, who danced along the 30th-place cut line all afternoon long. When the day wrapped, his T56 was enough to get him into the 29th slot. To win it all, he’ll need to win at East Lake and hope, among other events, that McIlroy finishes 27th or worse.
28. Ryan Moore: This is how you play your way in. Moore was 64th coming into the playoffs, but two top 10s at the Deutsche Bank and the BMW put him just inside the mark. Two years ago at East Lake, he finished tied for ninth. To win it all, he’ll need to win East Lake and Rory’s got to finish 25th or worse.
27. Rickie Fowler: He’ll be back many times, but he’ll need to work on his closing if he’s going to stick. He entered the playoffs ranked 18th, but gradually lost ground every round. Sure, he’s got a win this year along with some goofy videos, but he’ll need to bring more to the table. And he will. To win this year, he’ll need to take East Lake and McIlroy has to finish 23rd or worse.
26. John Huh: The benefits of off-week scheduling: Huh won the Mayakoba and as a result is the only rookie in this year’s Tour Championship. He started the playoffs ranked 25th and held serve, concluding with a T16 at the BMW to bring it home to Atlanta. He’ll need to win and Rory finish 21st or worse to take the FedExCup.
Next up: Two major-winners and one almost-winner.
