Ryder Cup Captain Jose Maria Olazabal has added the final two pieces of his European puzzle. Ian Poulter will join the squad, as will Nicolas Colsaerts. This marks Poulter’s fourth Ryder Cup selection and Colsaerts’ first.
Poulter’s strong play at the PGA Championship helped tilt the balance in his favor, and Colsaerts played his way on by impressing the European leadership with his dedication. He played the Wyndham in North Carolina and the Johnnie Walker Championship in Scotland; the European honchos love players who are more dedicated to the continental tour than the American one.
“It is true Nicolas is going to be the only rookie on the team but we do have an experienced team,” said Olazabal. “Out of the 12 players, 11 have played Ryder Cup. They have proven they can handle that pressure. They have the experience so we do have a very solid team.”
“Solid” may be an understatement. The European team also includes Luke Donald, Sergo Garcia, Peter Hanson, Martin Kaymer, Paul Lawrie, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood.
U.S. Captain Davis Love III will be announcing his four captain’s picks next Tuesday.
