This year I was coerced by a hockey writing friend of mine to do a weekly one-and-done golf pool that allows you to pick one golfer, never to use them again in 2013. Since I’m doing it for fun (and DEFINITELY not for money, no way, no how), I figured I’d post my weekly picks here, with who I’ve already used under it and my record for the year, and against the others in the pool. We’re calling this Darts in the Dark.
Northern Trust Open pick: Retief Goosen
Before I get into my pick this week, I just wanted to say thanks to Dustin Johnson. The long-hitter looked fantastic to start the season and I was excited about the time I’d use him. I told myself, “Oh Shane, why not put him in the back of your pocket for the FedEx Cup playoffs or the British Open or something when everyone else will be using guys with “Van” as a middle name or something” and I was all excited to do that. And then like a drunk guy in Las Vegas who broke even at the blackjack table and was trying to convince himself to go to his room only to turn back around to give that blackjack dealer ONE MORE SHOT I took him last week at Pebble Beach.
Smart pick, right? Johnson at Pebble Beach? Ha. You suckers are done!
And he missed the cut. He missed the damn cut! How is that possible?! Johnson is really, really good at golf and he’s even better when he’s at Pebble Beach. And he was playing with his girlfriend’s dad! Anyway, enough venting.
I like Retief this week because he played really well last week at Pebble Beach and … literally, I don’t know anymore, I’m terrible at fantasy golf. So yeah, Goosen. Go, fight, win!
