If there was ever a golf tournament made for one guy, it’s the Waste Management Open and Bubba Watson.
Bubba is a man known to cruise golf courses in hovercrafts, get crowds to cheer while he hits at Presidents Cups and just have some fun off the golf course, the main rule for fans out at TPC Scottsdale.
Playing on Thursday, Watson went off late and got everything he could out of his round, posting a 7-under 64 to tie for the lead alongside Y.E. Yang.
Watson’s 64 is his lowest round on tour since his opening round 63 at the Travelers Championship a season ago and it gives him a real shot at winning his first PGA Tour event since that Masters Sunday two years ago.
The shot of his round came at the famous 16th hole, where Watson hoisted a 9-iron miles in the air as the fans patiently waited to either cheer the crowd favorite or boo him if he missed the green.
His ball landed just a few feet past the hole, spun back a little and set Watson up for his eighth birdie of the day. Bubba would add another one on the par-4 17th and despite not making a birdie on the last, it was a really solid day for the four-time PGA Tour winner.
