Brendon Todd’s left-handed up-and-down was our ‘Tin Cup’ moment

There is a moment during the great film “Tin Cup” where Roy McAvoy, the out-of-his-mind driving range pro, finds himself in a strange spot at his fictional run at the U.S. Open. In typical crazy fashion, McAvoy bets Gary McCord that he can get it up and down, banking the shot off a portable toilet and finding the green.

Brendon Todd did his best McAvoy impression on Sunday at the Byron Nelson when his tee shot on the par-3 13th hole rolled right up against the trunk of a tree.

Todd elected to go with the back of the iron punch out, a shot a lot of people don’t normally use but probably the most effective way to get out of trouble if you’re forced to go wrong-handed, and pulled it off about as good as you could hope if you’re clinging to a lead and a hope of winning your first PGA Tour tournament.

Not only did the shot end up just eight feet away, but Todd made the putt for the par to maintain his momentum and give us one of the better recovery shots you’ll ever see on the PGA Tour.

Here is what Todd had to say about the shot after his round.

“I couldn’t believe when we were walking up to the green I saw my ball up against the tree. I was fortunate to have a bit of room there it was 12 inches away from the tree so I took my 4‑iron which is my longer iron in the bag and hit it the with the back of the club but I had to hood it a little bit to try and get it to come off to the right so I hit like a little draw putt with the back of my 4‑iron and it ran down there perfect. I didn’t care about where it went, I was just trying to get it away from the tree, toward the hole … The only thing I could say I drew on is my brother‑in‑law is left‑handed and I putted with his left‑handed putter before and I’m pretty good at it. So I tried to use that stroke.”

Todd’s lefty shot isn’t the only time we’ve seen PGA Tour players swing from the other side of the ball this season. Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson all went wrong-handed on the 17th at TPC Sawgrass before the Players Championship, with Fowler actually hitting it fairly close to the pin with his lefty swing.

As if you needed to know, but all of this is just a solid reminder that these guys are very, very good at this game.
