Just three days removed from Tiger Woods leaving the Honda Classic early with back issues, the No. 1 player in the world announced he will be in attendance at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral this week in Florida.
Woods, who withdrew on Sunday because of back spasm after struggling mightily with his final round, is set to talk to the media on Wednesday, but ESPN’s Bob Harig got the scoop from Tiger’s agent, Mark Steinberg, about Woods’ intent to play this week.
“He wouldn’t be coming down here if he didn’t intend to compete at the highest level,” Steinberg said. “He intends to play and wants to play well.”
This week now means a ton for Tiger, who has won this event seven times and at Doral four times. The course has gone through a massive redesign, and this week will be the first time Tiger has seen the changes, so getting in a solid practice round Wednesday afternoon would be good for Tiger if he really wants to compete throughout the weekend on this always tough test of golf.
If Tiger struggles this week with his game or his back, it could mean doom for the first major of the season, as Woods only has one more tournament scheduled before the Masters. Woods has never gone into Augusta National without a win and left with the green jacket, so playing solid golf this week is very important for his chances at the first major of 2014.
Still, the golf gods are letting out a long sigh with the Woods announcement, and Tiger will be paired with Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson for the first two rounds at Doral.
