Remember the days when the 59 Club was just a bunch of old guys that caught fire on the PGA Tour and found a different gear? Yeah, those days are long gone.
Will Grimmer, a 16-year-old playing in the North & South Junior this week, shot a second round 59 on Pinehurst #1, 11-under and definitely the course record on the new layout at the North Carolina golf mecca.
Grimmer, an upcoming junior at Mariemont High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, was only 1-under through his first five holes on Wednesday, but went crazy as he closed out his first nine holes. Grimmer, who started on No. 10, went on a tear on holes 15-18, playing them 5-under as he turned in 30, posting a back nine 29 to post the magic number.
How clutch was this performance? His final hole, a 148-yard par-3, was a must-birdie for Grimmer if he wanted to break 60, and after hitting it to 20 feet, he rolled that putt in for 59 and a day he will never forget.
