Nestled within the desert surroundings of Peoria, Arizona sits the Quintero Golf and Country Club. It features a beautiful 18 holes providing a 7,208 yard, par 72 round of golf from the longest tees (5,000 yards from the front tees). With most of the course being built into the foothills of the surrounding mountains it allows for huge elevation changes, seen especially on the par 3 holes. Opening in 2000 and designed by Rees Jones, this course will surely satisfy your desire for a unique and challenging golf experience. Being kept in pristine condition showcases the course’s Bermudan grass, elevation changes and the 3 holes that have water hazards in play.
Starting the round off with a seemingly easy par 4, you realize when you get to the green that you have no idea how to approach and putt on this hard and slick surface. With a miss hit approach shot or even the slightest tap of your putter, the ball can roll forever and end up off the green.
Halfway through the front nine you will arrive at the first par 3 and no matter where you decide to tee off from you are looking at a huge drop in elevation as well as the potential for windy conditions. Make sure to judge the conditions properly and select the right club as the room for error is minimal. The next two par 3 holes you arrive at will also have severe elevation changes, so make sure you’re mentally prepared. But don’t get scared off, the par 3’s were definitely our favourite holes to experience!
Hitting a straight drive in the desert air can be the most satisfying part of the round as you can achieve a longer distance than anywhere else in the world. Perhaps it is the thin and dry desert air or the hard fairways, but a 250 yard drive in any other part of the world can easily turn into 300 yards.
Unless you’re looking for a long and mountainous hike during your golf game, make sure you have a golf cart. The first and eighteenth holes are located far from the clubhouse and many of the holes have either a long distance between them or a huge elevation to overcome. All this combined with the desert heat would make for a gruelling round of golf without a cart. As an added convenience there are water stations and washrooms every 4 or 5 holes.
