For the last couple of weeks ,I got to drive around Vancouver in what the market calls an “Urban Crossover” which is really what you’d call an SUV if you left it in the dryer a bit to long . Not normally what I’d run to the dealership to buy but then I got to meet the 2015 Nissan Juke SL AWD and all of its might.
At first glance, It took a few minutes for my eyes to adjust. It’s not your typical boring looking miniature SUV. With its fiercely sculpted headlights, hood and rear. The Juke stands alone in its field and its hard not to notice it whenever you cross one on the road. The 2015 model packs a bit more punch the earlier model. Certain changes are hard to miss, like the new tail lights or the new headlights inspired by the Nissan 370Z that houses full LED daytime running lights. Nissan now offers an Color Studio Program which allows you to chose from 8 different color schemes. The color trims around the headlights and other parts gives every car a unique look and character.
But it’s not only the exterior changes that grabbed my attention. It’s what happens under the hood that got me excited. Nissan put in a new second-generation version of its proven 1.6-liter Direct Injection Gasoline (DIGTM) Turbo, 16-valve DOHC aluminum-alloy inline 4-cylinder engine. It has 188 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque and you feel all of it when you push the gas pedal. Nissan does gives 3 different driving options like Normal, Eco and then my favorite, Sport. I got to drive the new Juke along the sea to sky highway from Vancouver to Whistler. Not your typical straight and boring highway. The Juke handled the narrow curves and steep climbs with lots of ease and I had loads of fun. It’s a perky engine with lots of go. Being a relatively small hatchback allows it to weave through downtown traffic and get you across town quickly.
The interior is a little small but surprising. I really liked the positioning of the gearbox. It stands a little high on the console, giving you more of a race car experience. There are nice subtle touches like the leather trimmed steering wheel, that also gives you easy access to manage your media center . The center Control Panel has its own unique style as well. It will change display colors and functions depending on what drive option you use and same with climate control. The GPS system is the same you’ll find in other Nissan cars as well as access to satellite radio. Rearview Monitor is now standard with all Juke models. The leather appointed bolstered front bucket seat really added to the overall aggressive sporty look of the interior. The Juke can hold 5 adults but like any hatchback its going to be a tight squeeze but plenty of room in the front for just about any sized person.
At first, I was little skeptical about the Juke. It took me a couple of days to get used to its bold exterior but it only took me a few blocks to enjoy its power and handling. I’ve driven quite a few hatchbacks over the years but none that come close to having so much character. And after a few days it really grew on me. Nissan put together a real intriguing and exciting car…well done!
