Get Your Head In The Game: Improving Golfing Performance Mentally

Any sport requires mental training as much as it requires practical training. Having a clear head when playing golf is important – especially if you’re playing competitively and have the pressure of an audience. Here are few ways of mentally getting on course to prevent those below par performances.

Don’t get bogged down with the mechanics of shots

Every golfer needs to get to grips with the mechanics initially. But getting too caught up in angles and trajectories can put your mind under too much stress. Try instead when practicing to experiment and develop an idea for the power and distance through the feel of the swing. Professionals are able to practice certain shots and develop a muscle memory for them so that they don’t have to think about them when competing – they just come naturally.

Put yourself under pressure when you practice

The perfect way to overcome pressure is to make it the norm. Even when playing a leisurely round by yourself, try to install a sense of competition. Make it your goal to beat your previous score, or the score of another player. Befriend someone more advanced than you and ask to have a game with them and try to beat them (you may even learn from them).

If having an audience is the main thing dragging you down, try practicing golf in a public place somewhere. Buy a portable flag and cup, go down to your local park and practice some swings. You’ll soon get used to having eyes on you when playing.

Artificially stimulate your brain

Mentality is largely to do with attitude, but there are many ways to improve mental capacity artificially too. There are gadgets that can stimulate your brain electronically (don’t worry, the voltage is very low – I’m not suggesting you lobotomise yourself!). Many companies such as tDCS provide such gadget, which are used by professional athletes of all sports.

Hypnosis is another commonly pursued method of helping to get the brain in the zone. Mental Caddie is an example of a hypnosis programme that is wholly for golfers, developed by a self-help coach and fellow golf enthusiast. This may be an avenue worth exploring if you’re looking for motivation and a way of psychologically dealing with the pressure.

You can also use a number of holistic medicines to reduce nerves and improve focus. Drinking chamomile tea is a great herbal and natural way of calming yourself before a game, recommended to people before taking exams and tests. Other herbal ingredients with the same effect include magnesium, passion flower, lavender and kava, all proven to reduce blood pressure and calm muscles (although be careful of certain doses that may have a sleep-inducing quality – not good for when you have a game on). Chinese medicines such as acupuncture, or massages may be even be helpful the morning before a competition. Experiment with different natural remedies and techniques – you could find one that’s just right for you.
